What size unit do I need for decluttering?
Most decluttering projects fit comfortably in a 25-50 sq ft unit. 25 sq ft holds roughly 30 large boxes (a garden shed's worth). 50 sq ft fits the contents of a small one-bedroom flat including some furniture. If you're storing bikes, kayaks or larger sports gear, size up to 75 sq ft.
What can I store in personal storage?
Almost anything domestic: clothes, books, seasonal decorations, sports equipment, baby and children's gear (cots, prams, toys you're saving for a sibling), hobby equipment, tools, garden furniture, archives and paperwork. There are restrictions on perishable food, plants, live animals, flammables, firearms and anything illegal — your facility will share a full list at sign-up.
How to declutter using self storage
Start with the 'maybe' pile rather than what's clearly junk. Items you can't bear to bin but don't need this year are the perfect candidates for storage. Pack into uniform boxes (Really Useful boxes or storage tubs), label every side, and keep an inventory list on your phone. Place items you'll want sooner near the door.
Is personal storage worth the cost?
If you're a homeowner, the cost of extending or moving to a larger home dwarfs years of storage rent. If you're renting, freeing up a spare room can let you downsize to a cheaper flat. For most households a small unit pays for itself in either reclaimed space, sanity, or rent saved.
